“Matsueda-kun.”
"what happened?"
Why did she suddenly switch back to this form of address?
"Matsueda-kun?"
"……I am here."
"Chunjun~"
"Yes Yes."
"Pine branches."
The boy whistled.
A soft, gentle laugh echoed in the room. Jun Matsue waited a while, but no new address came.
He silently sat up and looked at his bed.
Tomatsu Yuka had already closed her eyes, her breathing peaceful and steady. The girl was still facing him, her skin close to her ear gleaming with a delicate light in the dim moonlight.
The fact that she fell asleep so quickly shows that she was really tired today, and it also shows that she was completely relaxed.
Jun Matsue lay down, listened to her breathing, and closed his eyes.
Tonight is Christmas Eve.
Chapter 537 A Morning with Differing Thoughts
When Jun Matsue woke up the next morning, he looked at the white ceiling in front of him.
He quickly realized that the faint sounds he was hearing were coming from the girl who was acting suspiciously beside him, and the boy turned his head, which was pressed against the pillow, to one side.
Tomatsu Yuka had already gotten out of bed and was kneeling beside his legs, supporting herself on all fours. Her large white T-shirt hung loosely in the air, revealing her smooth, white skin and the delicate triangular fabric that barely covered the top of her thighs.
When the boy looked over, the girl's hands were hanging above his legs, it was unclear whether she was planning to climb on him or was just passing by.
"Tomatsu?" Jun Matsueda looked up and called out.
"Ah, is Tsunku awake?" Tomatsu Yuka immediately sat up straight. "Well, I wanted to get up early, so I crawled over from your side."
Although she said that, her gaze never left the conspicuous tent that was erected on the boy's thin blanket.
Jun Matsue blinked, bending his legs to hide his youthful vigor. "If you get out of bed, your slippers aren't with me."
The girl stopped talking, blinked, and gave a naive and innocent look.
"..." The boy picked up his phone and looked at it. It was 6:55 a.m., and there were still 1 hour and 30 minutes until the scheduled time to arrive at school.
"Are you really getting up?" Even he usually doesn't get up until seven o'clock.
Tomatsu Yuka nodded. "I need to go home to change into my school uniform... and my underwear."
The image of the exquisite fabric he had just glimpsed flashed through Jun Matsue's mind, and he shook his head vigorously.
"Then I'll get up too. Walking will be too rushed, so I'll ride my bike to take you to the station."
It's definitely better to go to school early. If Mochizuki suddenly decides to go back to the apartment on her way to school, that would be hard to explain.
So at 7:20 a.m., the boy and girl walked out of the apartment together.
Jun Matsue pushed his bicycle out of the bike shed downstairs, and Yuka Tomatsu held down her dress behind her legs and sat sideways on the back seat.
"You're riding in Tsunku's car again, aren't you?" Tomatsu Yuka smiled and gently placed her hands on the boy's waist.
“This is illegal.” Jun Matsue didn’t turn around. He stepped onto the pedal, and the girl’s black hair was lifted by the airflow and floated backward.
"As long as we don't get caught, it'll be fine~"
The boy couldn't see her face, but he could hear her sly laughter spreading through the air.
Before the police could get on the road, the bicycle carrying the two of them hurriedly crossed the main road next to the school. Matsueda Jun first dropped Tomomichi off at Kugayama Station before turning back to Haneoka High School.
When he entered Class 6, Grade 3, there weren't many people in the classroom yet. When Jun Matsue saw the empty seat by the window in the back row, his slightly tense shoulders slumped down again.
Fortunately, the moon hasn't arrived yet.
Although he didn't even go to school with Tomatsu Yuka, the boy would probably still feel guilty if he were to face Mochizuki Haruka's clear, watery eyes as soon as he entered the classroom.
She just told Mochizuki she was about to break up, and then immediately brought Tomatsu home. That kind of behavior doesn't seem very believable...
Jun Matsue sighed and sat down in his seat.
Mochizuki Haruka arrived at the classroom at 8:15, ten minutes before the morning meeting was scheduled to begin.
The first thing the girl did upon entering was to look in surprise at Tomatsu Yuka's seat.
"This guy hasn't shown up at this time today?"
Jun Matsue looked up at her. "He was probably held up by something."
"That's really strange..." Mochizuki Haruka walked towards her seat, her steps becoming a little more cheerful.
"So how did your filming go yesterday afternoon?" The girl pulled out her textbook and placed it on the table.
"...It's not going too well, Tomatsu isn't in the right state of mind."
The boy glanced at the spot to his right, then looked at his phone. Tomatsu hadn't sent any messages, so it should be fine.
"Out of sorts?" Mochizuki Haruka lazily sprawled on the table, raising an eyebrow at him. "What's wrong with this guy? He was mocking my acting earlier."
"...Could it be that she's on her period?" The girl made the most reasonable guess based on her lateness today.
“There must be something else going on,” Jun Matsue said vaguely.
Perhaps it's because she's breaking up with Matsue that she's so heartbroken she can't control herself... Mochizuki Haruka thought with a sweet malice.
She stood up from her seat, propped her chin on her hand, and looked at the boy. "Speaking of which, I saw Yamami Maki at the banquet last night."
Jun Matsue blinked, his expression unchanged. He looked at the textbook in front of him and said, "It's not like your two families don't communicate, so it's normal for you to meet."
"But this is the first time she has appeared at a banquet since the common exams ended last year."
"Really? What does the senior look like?" The boy turned a page in his textbook.
"It looks pretty good." The girl's tone was a little uneven, but there was no real concern in her words; it was as if she was repeating entertainment news she had heard from someone else.
"She appeared with the daughter of the Kuroba family. They both seem to be from Ochanomizu University. Anyway, Yamami Maki seemed to be smiling quite happily."
"That's good." Jun Matsueda looked up. "At least it means her university life must have been pretty good, right?"
“…Hmm.” Mochizuki Haruka nodded slightly.
"Is there anything else interesting you want to tell me?" the boy asked with a smile.
“I brought Jinzhi back to my apartment on my way to school. Her cat food is almost gone, and I'd like you to come with me to buy some.”
"Okay, I happen to be free today."
“That’s it~” The girl nodded.
Matsue's reaction was more subdued than she had expected, which Mochizuki Haruka found to be good news.
After they announce their breakup, she will officially prepare to take over Songzhi... The girl turned her head to look out the window.
The sun is shining brightly and the sky is clear; it's perfect weather for spring.
Five minutes before the school bell rang, Tomatsu Yuka finally entered the classroom through the back door.
"I almost overslept today, thank goodness!" She gave the person next to her an apologetic smile and quickly walked to her seat.
"It's good that you weren't late." The boy nodded.
The girl sitting by the window snorted softly, "What kind of sweet dream could make you oversleep? So lazy, I think your chances of getting into Tokyo University are in danger."
As is typical of Tomatsu Yuka, she would usually respond to Mochizuki Haruka with gentle yet hostile words, but today, she simply smiled slightly.
"It was indeed a wonderful dream."
"If possible, I really hope it can continue to be done."
The girl's expectant tone startled Mochizuki Haruka, who, losing interest, turned away to end the conversation.
Jun Matsuoka sat between the two of them and silently turned another page of his book.
Chapter 538 Unwilling
The first day back at school has passed, and Haneoka High School welcomes May—with the four-day holiday just around the corner, the students, eager for the holiday to continue, are really restless.
"Even though we'll be on holiday tomorrow afternoon, you still have to study hard!" That's what Ms. Kominato reminded everyone.
After watching the homeroom teacher leave the classroom, Jun Matsue stretched.
The sunshine these past few days has been exceptionally bright, making people feel more active—sitting in a small space, head down writing, is indeed a bit tedious.
"How did you feel about the English quiz?" he asked, looking at the girl sitting by the window.
"It's alright." Mochizuki Haruka fiddled with the fish-shaped keychain on her pencil case. "Only the last reading comprehension passage was a bit difficult."
"That means you've made a lot of progress." The boy closed his book. "You certainly wouldn't have found this easy before."
"Of course." The girl rolled her eyes at him. "I haven't forgotten what I learned before."
“Keep it up.” Jun Matsue smiled, looking at the squashed blue fish in her hand. “You actually put it to use.”
This fish-shaped plush pendant was a haul the two of them picked up yesterday at a pet supply store; Mochizuki Haruka bought it on a whim.
Logically, this was supposed to be a pet toy for Jinzhi, but the girl grew to like the little blue fish more and more, and eventually kept it for herself.
"Is it not allowed?" Mochizuki Haruka wrinkled her nose. "They're all toys anyway, so it doesn't matter whether Jinzhi plays with them or I do."
"Whatever makes you happy." Jun Matsueda shrugged.
He remembered that this stuff contained catnip. Since Mochizuki liked it so much, maybe she really was a cat?
The boy turned around and saw that Tomatsu Yuka's seat was empty. Her morning classes had just ended, and she must have already gone to eat.
Since understanding the reason for Tomatsu's melancholy, Jun Matsueda has been paying more attention to her, but he has been taking exams these past two days and can't tell what's wrong with the girl's emotional state.
If her parents really don't get back together, Tomatsu will probably be even more heartbroken than he was the day before yesterday... The boy was a little worried.
"Is Matsue going to the cafeteria?" Mochizuki Haruka's voice rang in his ears, bringing him back to his senses.
"How about I have dinner with you today?"
Jun Matsueda looked up at the noisy classroom. Everyone was busy laying out tablecloths and opening lunchboxes, and no one noticed him.
He whispered to the girl, "Tomatsu and I haven't broken up yet."
Mochizuki Haruka pouted in dissatisfaction, "Then when will we split up?"
"The Golden Week holiday isn't over yet..."
"Can't you hurry up?" She clenched her fists and sat back down in her seat. "I'm not going to the cafeteria, I want to sleep."
"Remember to bring me rice balls and milk," the girl said sullenly.
One person eats lunch quickly. When Jun Matsue returned to the classroom, Yuka Tomatsu was already back in her seat, while Haruka Mochizuki was still sleeping on her desk.
The boy placed the food he was holding on the girl's table by the window. When he turned around, the girl on the other side waved to him.
"What's wrong?" Jun Matsuoka walked up to her.
"I'd like to call my dad at noon," Tomatsu Yuka said hesitantly. "Could Tsunku come with me?"
The boy glanced behind him and said, "...Of course."
The two walked up to the rooftop of the teaching building. The clouds were thin today, like puddles on the ground that could disappear at any moment after a summer rain.
“I often come here when I’m feeling down lately,” the girl said with a troubled smile.
“I can understand.” Jun Matsue nodded. “After all, once we move to the fourth floor, we’ll be the group of people in the school who are closest to the sky.”
Tomatsu Yuka's eyes crinkled with a smile. "As expected of Jun-kun, he can even make something like this sound so appealing."
"So what do you want to say to your father? Ask him about his infidelity?" the boy asked, leaning against the outer wall of the stairwell behind him.
"Hmm." The girl smoothed her hair behind her ear and gazed at the clouds on the distant horizon.
"If that's really the case, I don't want to just see 'yes' in words; I want to at least hear Dad's tone of voice..."
“Agreed.” Jun Matsue nodded.
