Chapter 398: He Wenhui's Favoritism
Chapter 398: He Wenhui's Favoritism
He Wenhui was stunned by the scene inside.
Zhang Lei first helped He Wenhui sit on the edge of the bed, then immediately rushed outside shouting, "Doctor! Nurse! Come quickly and save her!"
The doctors and nurses heard the shouts and immediately ran over.
By this time, Yu Qiuhua had already wiped her face, and the gauze over one eye was completely soaked.
Seeing this, Zhang Lei immediately scolded, "Auntie, don't move! Wait for the doctor!"
He Wentao and He Wenda tried to go forward to wipe the water, but Zhang Lei sternly stopped them: "He Wentao, He Wenda, stop right there!"
He was startled when he saw that the towel was filthy.
He Wenhui also realized what was happening and quickly pulled her two younger brothers aside.
The doctors and nurses immediately went to examine her. Following the doctor's instructions, the nurses brought ice packs to apply to Yu Qiuhua's burned face and the area around her eyes.
When He Wenyuan returned from the restroom and saw the situation in the ward, he was so frightened that he immediately asked, "Sister, what happened to Mom?"
He Wenhui was both angry and anxious, and immediately scolded, "Wenyuan, didn't I tell you to stay here and watch over Mom? How did you do that?"
He Wenyuan was both aggrieved and flustered: "I just went to the restroom. Everyone has to go sometimes, and I couldn't possibly relieve myself at their bedside. Besides, I repeatedly told them before I left, who could have imagined this would happen? How can you blame me?"
As he spoke, He Wenyuan squatted down on the ground and began to cry.
Zhang Lei said, "If you want to know what's going on, just ask your two good brothers what they did."
He Wenyuan immediately looked at the two men and angrily asked, "Wentao, Wenda, you two tell me, what exactly happened? What did you do to Mom?"
He Wentao and He Wenda were so frightened that they squatted down to the side, not daring to say a word.
He Wenyuan was so anxious that he wanted to grab them, but He Wenhui stopped him: "Alright, let's wait until the doctor has finished examining them before asking them questions."
After examining the eye, the doctor shook his head: "We'll only know the exact condition of the left eye after the bandages are removed. The right eye should be fine."
Hearing this, everyone's hearts skipped a beat.
He Wenhui hurriedly asked, "Doctor, is there any chance my mother's left eye can recover? Or is it beyond cure?"
The doctor shook his head: "It's unclear right now; we can only wait and see how she recovers. She was probably scalded by boiling water. We can only do our best."
The doctor said helplessly, "I repeatedly told you not to get water in your eyes, and it's only been a short time! And it's boiling water! Even a normal person's eyes can't handle that, let alone someone who just had surgery."
After saying this, the doctor gave the nurse a few instructions and left.
After the doctors and nurses left, He Wenhui could no longer hold back and yelled at her two younger brothers, "Wentao, Wenda, tell me what happened? Why did you throw boiling water in Mom's face?"
He Wentao whispered in his defense, "Sis, I didn't mean to. Wenda was trying to take my water, and I accidentally..."
He Wenda quickly explained, "Sister, I really didn't mean to. I didn't know it was boiling water."
The two men shifted blame onto each other, making Zhang Lei shake his head in disbelief.
Enraged, He Wenyuan stepped forward and slapped both of them, leaving them stunned on the spot.
He Wenyuan shouted angrily, "I told you not to cause trouble, but you wouldn't listen! If Mom's eyes don't get better, I won't let you two off the hook!"
He Wentao and He Wenda were so frightened that they dared not speak again.
Zhang Lei was about to speak when He Wenhui spoke first: "Alright, Wenyuan, we can't blame them entirely for this. What about you? Where did you go? Didn't I tell you to take good care of Mom? You promised to do so."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Lei felt a pang of sadness.
He Wenyuan was also stunned: "Sis, what do you mean by that? I just went to the restroom, what could I possibly do?"
Yu Qiuhua quickly stopped them: "Alright, alright, stop arguing. What's done is done, there's nothing we can do. Didn't the doctor say we should talk about it after the bandages are removed?"
Zhang Lei stood silently to the side, looking at He Wenhui, and for the first time hesitated in his heart about whether he should still marry her.
He could clearly see that He Wenhui had a slight preference for He Wentao and He Wenda, probably because they were boys.
He couldn't help but wonder if He Wenhui would also blame him without distinguishing right from wrong, instead of rationally analyzing the situation if this happened to him.
In the TV series, He Wenhui is biased and always covers up the mistakes of her younger siblings.
Zhang Lei wanted to have a good talk with He Wenhui, but seeing that she was taking care of Yu Qiuhua, he was too embarrassed to speak up.
He Wenyuan kicked He Wentao and He Wenda out of the ward and took them home with him.
Only Zhang Lei, He Wenhui, and the sleeping Yu Qiuhua remained in the ward.
Zhang Lei was looking around absentmindedly when He Wenhui suddenly patted him on the shoulder.
He looked up and saw He Wenhui gesturing to him that Yu Qiuhua was already asleep.
Zhang Lei nodded, and the two quietly left the ward.
Zhang Lei looked at He Wenhui and said, "Thank you for your hard work."
He Wenhui shook her head: "This is what I should do."
Zhang Lei thought for a moment and then spoke up: "Wenhui, wasn't your attitude towards Wenyuan a bit too extreme just now? The fault mainly lies with Wentao and Wenda. Wenyuan was just going to the restroom; he didn't leave on purpose."
He Wenhui paused for a moment, then said, "No, I don't think so."
Zhang Lei said seriously, "You should criticize the person who caused the trouble, not Wen Yuan first."
He Wenhui looked at him: "Zhang Lei, do you think I'm being too biased?"
Zhang Lei nodded.
He Wenhui said, "I understand. I will find time to apologize to Wenyuan."
Zhang Lei nodded helplessly: "Your younger brother and sister's affairs are your responsibility. I'm just offering a suggestion. But I hope you can be more rational in the future. If you're wrong, you should admit it. Blindly showing favoritism will only lead to bigger mistakes."
He Wenhui said impatiently, "Alright, I know. In the end, it's my fault too. I shouldn't have left."
Upon hearing this, Zhang Lei immediately shut up.
He knew very well that if he continued talking, He Wenhui would definitely shift the blame onto him.
He didn't want to argue anymore and turned to leave the hospital.
Back home, Zhang Lei was still thinking about He Wenhui, wondering if marrying her was the right thing to do.
Just as he was in a daze, someone tapped him on the shoulder from behind.
Looking back, I saw Ye Shuqin.
Zhang Lei breathed a sigh of relief: "Shuqin, what's wrong?"
Ye Shuqin looked at him: "Honey, I should be the one asking you that. Why are you looking so downcast?"
Zhang Lei recounted what happened at the hospital.
After listening, Ye Shuqin gently advised, "Husband, don't think like that. He Wenhui is the eldest sister, and she treats her younger siblings differently. Even an upright official can't settle family disputes."
No one can be completely impartial. Just like you, you say you treat all of us sisters equally, but you can't actually do it. You can't even do it yourself, so why force her to?
Besides, people change, and laying things out on the table can lead to different outcomes. Of course, the most important thing is whether you like her or not.
Zhang Lei held Ye Shuqin's hand: "It's so good to have you here."
Ye Shuqin smiled and placed his hand on her stomach: "Honey, feel it, I can feel the three of them moving."
Zhang Lei quickly reached out and touched it, carefully feeling it: "Really, I really felt them move."
