Chapter 129 Senior Inspector as Mistress
"Great! Inspector Chen came to invite me personally, I'll give him that courtesy."
He turned to Wu Zhaoyong and said, "Ayong, you go back first. Tell Axiao that things have changed, and I will let you know."
"Brother Wen—" Wu Zhaoyong said with some concern.
"It's nothing, just going back with Inspector Chen to assist with the questioning," Song Zhaowen patted him on the shoulder, then gestured with his chin toward Deng Weitao: "Deng Sir, learn from this, this isn't how you invite people."
After saying that, he strode over to Chen Jiaqi's Accord, opened the passenger door, and got in.
Deng Weitao and his men looked at each other in disbelief. They never expected that Song Zhaowen, who had been so arrogant and domineering just moments before, would so "cooperate" and get into the car as soon as Chen Jiaqi arrived.
Chen Jiaqi nodded to Deng Weitao: "I'll leave this to you and take him back."
As soon as the car turned a corner and left the sight of the people in the villa area, Song Zhaowen leaned back comfortably in the leather seat, turned his head, and his gaze swept over Chen Jiaqi's exquisite curves wrapped in a suit skirt without any attempt to hide it.
"Inspector Chen, you've been promoted to senior inspector, your aura is completely different now." Song Zhaowen's voice was teasing.
"Song Zhaowen, you are now a suspect assisting in the investigation. Watch your words."
"Suspect?" Song Zhaowen scoffed, then suddenly leaned towards Chen Jiaqi, casually placing one hand on her thigh, which was clad in black stockings.
Chen Jiaqi's body stiffened abruptly, and the steering wheel even shook.
"What are you doing?!" she hissed in a low voice.
Song Zhaowen did not remove his hand. Instead, he slowly groped upwards along the silky stockings, his fingertips carrying a burning heat, touching her taut skin through the thin stockings.
"What am I doing?" Song Zhaowen leaned close to her ear, his breath hot on her sensitive earlobe. "Inspector Chen, you came all this way to invite me, just because you missed me? Why are you acting so serious? Aren't you tired?"
"You bastard, take your hand off me, I'm driving!" Chen Jiaqi's cheeks flushed, and his breathing became a little rapid.
"Song Zhaowen, can you behave yourself?" Chen Jiaqi was both ashamed and angry, but dared not make any big moves, for fear of really losing control.
"I went too far?" Song Zhaowen chuckled, his fingers continuing to trace the water's surface. "Inspector Chen, one of your hotheads came to ambush me this morning. Who's really going too far? Did you instruct him, or is he just desperate for credit?"
Chen Jiaqi rolled his eyes at Song Zhaowen: "Deng Weitao—he's not one of my men. He's directly connected to the foreign police chief, while I'm just the deputy chief. I only found out about his actions before he came."
"The foreign director?" Song Zhaowen stopped what he was doing. "So, the foreigners are trying to get me?"
"The police chief is newly transferred; this guy's desperate for credit. You've been getting too much attention lately. Guanghetai was wiped out overnight. Chen Mei died in Thailand, Li Tianyi, Big Guang, and Big D disappeared, and a massive brawl broke out in three locations—"
Using you as a scapegoat would be a huge, unexpected achievement.
Song Zhaowen scoffed, "Using me to gain merit? I'd be afraid he'd be bursting with envy!"
"You're insane!" Chen Jiaqi spat. "Let me tell you, you better watch out. Richard isn't joking. He was transferred from Scotland Yard; he has powerful connections and ruthless methods. He definitely has more than just Deng Weitao as a trump card. Be careful where you go these days, and make sure your men do things cleanly, so he doesn't find anything on you."
Song Zhaowen leaned back in his chair, lit a cigar, and stared coldly at the rapidly receding seascape outside the window: "Clue? Chen Mei died in Thailand, what does that have to do with me? Li Tianyi, Da Zhi Guang, Da D, who knows where they went? Maybe they went to Africa to mine. As for the brawl—Officer, there are so many fights in Hong Kong every day, he's not going to pin it all on me, is he?"
He exhaled a smoke ring and slowly said, "Richard wants to use me to gain merit? Fine, let him produce solid evidence. If he can't, he's just trying to pin this on me—"
Song Zhaowen turned to Chen Jiaqi, his eyes sharp as knives: "Then I'll let him know that Hong Kong isn't a place where a parachuted-in foreigner like him can call the shots. He wants to cause trouble out of nowhere? I'll blow him up first!"
The ruthlessness and domineering tone in his words sent a chill down Chen Jiaqi's spine. She knew that Song Zhaowen was not just talking. This man, when truly pushed to the limit, was capable of anything.
"Don't do anything reckless!" Chen Jiaqi said instinctively, "He's the chief of police, he represents the police force. There's no benefit in confronting him head-on!"
"A head-on collision?" Song Zhaowen scoffed. "Who said I was going to confront him head-on? Inspector Chen, you've been promoted to senior inspector, but why has your brain become duller? There are ways to deal with foreigners, of course."
Chen Jiaqi's heart skipped a beat: "You mean—"
"I didn't say anything," Song Zhaowen interrupted her. "Let's see what he does first."
"Let's talk about you first, Inspector Chen. Richard is clearly going to make an example of me. What are you going to do? Side with him, or—"
He stared intently at Chen Jiaqi.
Chen Jiaqi bit her lip, struggling internally. Should she side with Richard? Putting aside the complicated relationship between her and Song Zhaowen, from a purely self-interested perspective, Richard's arrival was unstable, and following him might not guarantee success; she could even become a sacrifice. Most importantly, Richard was blocking her path to advancement.
If Richard were not in office, the position of West Kowloon Police Commissioner would definitely belong to her.
Moreover, during the time he worked with Song Zhaowen, he delivered several great achievements, so the answer to this option is quite simple.
"I—" Chen Jiaqi took a deep breath, as if he had made a decision. "I will naturally carry out Director William's orders. But as the deputy director, I believe that investigations must be based on evidence. We cannot target an influential citizen in a big way and affect social stability just because of some unsubstantiated information. I will ensure the impartiality of the investigation within the scope of my authority."
He is indeed a cultured person.
These words sounded grand and righteous, but Song Zhaowen immediately understood their underlying bias. She chose—
Secretly showing favoritism.
Having gotten the answer he wanted, Song Zhaowen was overjoyed and dipped his finger a little deeper: "Wow, the Jiaqi Dam is flooding!"
Chen Jiaqi rolled his eyes at the man next to him: "After this is all over, come to my place and we'll have a few glasses of red wine together."
As the two were talking, the car had already arrived at the West Kowloon Police Station.
Chen Jiaqi led Song Zhaowen into the police station's interrogation room.
Of course, Song Zhaowen wasn't a suspect, so he didn't need to be handcuffed; he was even served high-class coffee.
A middle-aged white man with blond hair, blue eyes, and a serious, stern face, dressed in a crisp police superintendent's uniform, strode in, accompanied by several senior officers.
It was Richard, the newly transferred director.
The others were of lower rank but were likely his core followers, while Chen Jiaqi, who held a higher rank, could only stand on the outermost edge.
"Mr. Song Zhaowen, I am Richard, the Commissioner of the West Kowloon Regional Command. Welcome to the West Kowloon Police Station."
He said "welcome" but his tone was cold and his eyes were devoid of any warmth.
"Chief Inspector, I've long admired your name." Song Zhaowen smiled and extended his hand. "I heard you're an elite from London, specializing in combating organized crime? That's perfect. We law-abiding citizens of Hong Kong need capable officers like you to maintain order."
These words sounded polite, but they carried a barb. Richard's eyes grew even colder. He didn't shake Song Zhaowen's outstretched hand, but instead put his hands behind his back and straightened his back: "Maintaining public order is our duty. However, sometimes combating crime requires extraordinary measures. Mr. Song, we have received reliable intelligence that you and the Zhengxing Society you lead are directly linked to several serious crimes recently. I hope you can give us a clear explanation here."
Song Zhaowen withdrew his hand, not embarrassed, and put it back in his pocket. His smile faded slightly. "Chief Prosecutor," he said, "you can't just say things like that. Zhengxing is a legally registered company engaged in legitimate businesses such as entertainment, catering, and logistics. We pay a large amount of tax to the government every year and provide employment for thousands of people. As for the serious crimes you mentioned—"—I and my company have always abided by the law. If you have any evidence, please present it. If not, it's defamation, and I will have my lawyers pursue it to the end."
"Mr. Song, you're quite the smooth talker." Richard's voice grew even colder. "But crime is crime, and it doesn't become legitimate business just because it's packaged as a company. Our police have solid intelligence showing that the Zhengxing Triad, which is your company, has been involved in and even orchestrated several recent violent incidents in Kwun Tong and Temple Street, resulting in multiple injuries and deaths. Furthermore, the mysterious death of Chen Mei, the leader of the Hongtai triad, in Thailand, and his son, Prince Tai, who also died a violent death, are all inextricably linked to you!"
He stepped forward, placing his hands on the interrogation table and leaning forward in a menacing posture: "Song Zhaowen, this is a police station, not your gangster headquarters! I advise you to confess honestly and cooperate with our investigation to try and receive leniency. Otherwise—"
Song Zhaowen wasn't buying it at all. He leaned back, crossed his legs, and became even more relaxed than before: "Chief Inspector, you're from London, you should know what 'presumption of innocence' means, right? You want to convict me based on some unsubstantiated information? Hong Kong law doesn't seem to be written like that; or is this just your style of handling cases?"
(PS: Richard, also from "The Edge Walker", is a corrupt cop.)
