Chapter 59 The King's Test
Chapter 59 The King's Test
The king emerged from the portal to the Sanctuary, on the other side of which was an unassuming apartment.
The paint on the exterior walls has peeled off in large areas, making the entire apartment building look like a rotten tooth among the surrounding buildings.
Fury's choice of this place suggests he has no other options.
Wang pushed open the door and was greeted by the smell of cheap disinfectant and a face covered in blood vessels.
"Master Wang, you've arrived." Fury's voice was tired, but he wasn't surprised by Wang's arrival. "You rejected us before, why have you changed your mind now?"
Wang was silent for a moment, sensing that Fury in front of him was already out of his mind: "You know very well why I came. Tell me, how did you contact Jonah?"
Fury shrugged: "It's simple. We had records of him in S.H.I.E.L.D. before, so finding him isn't difficult."
"You want to drag the Holy Sanctuary down with you?" The king didn't mince words.
Fury leaned back in his chair, his tone becoming defiant: "You can interpret it that way if you want. I just want to draw the attention of you high and mighty mages to the affairs of mortals."
Wang ignored his provocation: "Do you know who you're fighting against? The Holy Lord is looking for your place right now. He's not a demon, and even if you want to drag us down with you, we can't do anything about it."
Fury raised an eyebrow. The fact that Shendu was looking for his location meant that there were currently no Shendu members around him.
Natasha's words that day had already aroused his suspicions, but now that the king had said this, he could finally put his mind at ease.
His actions may not be understood by Natasha right now, but that's okay. There's only half a day left. Once Captain Marvel arrives on Earth, everything will change.
Fury let out a short laugh: "So you're trying to tell me that it's not just Shendu who's watching me now, but also the most powerful magical organization on Earth?"
Wang frowned slightly: "I'm just reminding you that the Sanctuary has no intention of taking action."
A portal unfolded before them, and the king paused after stepping inside: "I advise you to stay away from the Holy Lord."
Fury stood alone in the dimly lit room, watching the King's figure gradually disappear into the light of the teleportation array.
"The King is gone," Fury said to the remaining Avengers in the next room as he pushed open the door.
Clinton wiped the bow in his hand, looked up at Fury's mental state, and saw that he was fine and had no suicidal thoughts.
Natasha turned around at the window and asked, "What did he say?"
Fury glanced at her: "The Sanctuary doesn't want to get involved in our affairs. They made it clear that Jonah's matter has nothing to do with them, and also warned us to stay away from the Lord."
"That's it?" Clinton put down what he was doing and looked up. "You didn't mention why we approached them earlier? Even though we were rejected."
"That's exactly right."
Fury explained, "They didn't want to go into the water, and it wouldn't make a difference if I told them my purpose."
The atmosphere in the room became oppressive again. Steve sat in the corner, staring at the ceiling, seemingly lost in thought.
Fury took a deep breath and spoke first to break the awkward atmosphere.
"Actually, when I was in the military, I called for reinforcements. A very old friend of mine will arrive on Earth this afternoon."
"Who?" Steve asked.
"Captain Marvel".
Fury spoke the name with unusual certainty: "Carol Danvers, a half-human, half-Kree hybrid, is probably the strongest human at present."
"I've never heard of this person before," Hawkeye said, now fearing that Fury was mentally unstable and had conjured up an accomplice out of thin air.
Fury closed the windows to make sure no one could hear, even though nobody was paying attention to the apartment at all.
"It's normal that you haven't heard of her. Everything about her is classified. It happened in the 1990s, before you joined S.H.I.E.L.D."
Fritz paused. "Her power comes from the Space Stone."
"The Space Stone? Wasn't it taken back to Asgard by Thor?" Steve asked.
Fury shook his head: "To be precise, Carol and the Space Stone's energy underwent some kind of fusion."
"I can't explain the specific process either, because I don't fully understand it, but I can be sure that she is the most powerful being I have ever seen. When she arrives on Earth, the Holy Lord will be nothing more than an ant compared to her."
Natasha was silent for a few seconds, then whispered, "She can stand against Shendu all by herself?"
“She’s not alone,” Fury said, looking at Natasha. “She has us.”
The room fell silent again, with only the abrupt sound of police sirens coming from outside the window.
Steve stood up, his eyes fixed on Fury's remaining eye, a hint of anger in his voice: "You planned this from the beginning? Even with Tony and Banner, even after we lost them."
Fury didn't avoid Steve's gaze: "I'm the mastermind behind S.H.I.E.L.D., it's normal to have a backup plan."
"Then why didn't you say so sooner?" Clinton's tone also carried a hint of displeasure. "We've been hiding from Shendu like rats all this time, and you had someone in your hands who could stand against Shendu, yet you didn't say a word?"
Fury's expression turned cold as he listened to Clinton's words: "I need you to remain vigilant at all times. Also, do not question the leader's plans."
"The head of state?" Clinton couldn't help but laugh. "A head of state driven by desire? You're quite the role model."
Fury ignored Clinton's sarcasm and continued, "Hope is a double-edged sword. I've seen too many people let their guard down because of hope, only to die before hope even arrives."
Natasha walked over to Clinton, patted his shoulder, and tried to calm him down.
As Fury watched Natasha comfort Clinton, his suspicions about her vanished completely.
The Holy of Holies.
Mordo looked at the portal that appeared and asked the king who walked out of it, "Are you sure you don't want to tell Frewanda about it?"
The king's tone was indifferent: "Tell him what? That the Holy Lord has a subordinate capable of using chaos magic, making him even more desperate?"
Modu fell silent.
Wang stood in front of the map: "I just confirmed something. Fury should still have a trump card up his sleeve, otherwise he wouldn't have chosen to live in that small room."
Mordo frowned: "What trump card?"
Wang shook his head: "I don't know. He didn't say that the Sanctum Sanctorum should not take sides. The Ancient One is currently unavailable. Since Fury thinks that trump card can threaten the Holy Lord, it will probably attract our attention as well."
As soon as the words were spoken, a ring of golden runes suddenly appeared on the ceiling in the center of the hall, an ancient aura reverberating throughout the hall, and an uneasy atmosphere spreading within it.
King and Mordo looked up at the same time; it was the Sanctuary's alarm system, indicating that someone was approaching the atmosphere with extremely high energy density.
