Chapter 271: Whispers from the Rift
Chapter 271: Whispers from the Rift
After the explosion of the Abyss Core, the entire dimension fell into a deathly silence. The Guardians stood on the shattered crystalline ruins, their bodies covered in the marks of battle. Although the energy of the Rift Core had been destroyed, they felt no relief. A strange sense of oppression permeated the air, as if the darkness of the Abyss still silently watched over them.
Ares gripped the rune sword, feeling a faint tremor emanating from its blade. He knew the sword had just carried too much energy, almost reaching its limit. His own body was also exhausted, but more than the physical fatigue, he couldn't ignore the vague unease deep within his heart.
“We’ve taken down the core, but I don’t think the problem is solved.” Wagner slung his battle axe over his shoulder and scanned his surroundings. “This place still has an eerie atmosphere.”
Selena raised the scanner in her hand, frowning as she said, "The energy fluctuations here haven't completely disappeared; the remnants of the rift seem to still exist deep within the dimension. And... didn't you all sense that something was off about what the core said just now?"
“It mentions freedom,” Ares said in a low voice, his gaze grave. “It believes it is imprisoned by the rules of the universe, and the rift is its tool to break those rules.”
“That sounds like the logic of a madman,” Wagner sneered. “Unfortunately, its dream of freedom has been shattered by us.”
“But its will has not completely disappeared.” Selena looked into the distance. “We need to report the situation here to the observers as soon as possible. If the residual energy of the rift begins to operate independently, the balance of the entire universe will still be in jeopardy.”
The Guardians departed the Abyss dimension aboard their shuttle, and when they returned to the core of the Star Chart, the Observers were already waiting for them. The Star Chart's radiance was dimmer than ever before, as if it were under some unspeakable pressure.
"You have completed your mission." The Observer's voice was deep and steady, but carried an imperceptible sense of urgency. "But the destruction of the Rift Core is only a partial victory; the real crisis is not yet over."
“We have done everything in our power to destroy the core,” Ares said firmly, “but the anomalies in the Abyss dimension make me uneasy. The power of the rift seems to have a deeper purpose.”
“Your feeling is correct.” The observer’s light flickered slightly. “The rift is not merely a form of energy; it is an unusual expression of a deep-seated rule of the universe. Its existence is inextricably linked to the origin of the universe. Although the core has been destroyed, the will of the rift is still searching for a new vessel.”
"A new carrier?" Selena's eyes sharpened. "You mean, it will attach itself to other dimensions, or even to living beings?"
“Yes,” the observer said. “I have detected similar energy fluctuations in multiple dimensions. Their characteristics are similar to the rifts in the Abyss Dimension, but they are more concealed.”
Wagner gripped his battle axe tightly and asked in a deep voice, "So what should we do next? One core is already enough for us, and now we have to deal with other dimensions?"
"The will of the Rift is seeking a new form, and your task is to destroy it before it fully forms," the Observer calmly replied. "I will provide you with the latest coordinates of the star chart. These coordinates point to the dimensions where the Rift's energy is active. You must act swiftly, or the Rift will rise again."
Meanwhile, at the other end of the universe, a special dimension called the "Eternal Vortex" suddenly underwent a change. This dimension is known for its cycles of time and space, but in recent cosmic cycles, cracks have begun to appear at its boundaries, and the flow of time has become disordered.
The guardians of the Eternal Vortex attempted to stabilize the dimensions, but they discovered that these cracks not only disrupted the rules of time but also released an unknown energy. This energy rapidly eroded the core of the dimensions, even paralyzing the entire space.
“These cracks are not ordinary damage,” said one researcher of the Eternal Vortex, his eyes filled with fear. “They appear to be the product of some external force. And this force is trying to alter the flow of our time.”
"Contact the Observers immediately!" the leader of the Eternal Vortex issued an urgent order. "We need the Guardians' help!"
Just as the Guardians were preparing to head to the new coordinates, Ares suddenly sensed a strange fluctuation. His rune sword trembled again, and blurry runes appeared on its surface, seemingly piecing together some kind of information.
"Ares, what's wrong?" Selena noticed his unusual behavior and stopped her preparations.
“I don’t know,” Ares replied, frowning as he stared at the rune sword. “But it seems to be conveying some kind of message, or rather… the will of the Rift is trying to communicate with me.”
“A dialogue?” Wagner sneered. “Don’t tell me you’re planning to listen to that nonsense.”
“It’s not necessarily all lies.” Ares closed his eyes, trying to concentrate on perceiving the information on the rune sword. He vaguely heard a deep voice, as if it came from the depths of time, carrying an irresistible attraction.
"Your attempts to repair it are futile... The rules of the universe are a prison... The awakening of the rift is an unstoppable destiny."
Ares snapped his eyes open, his forehead beaded with cold sweat. He gasped, "It's trying to influence my mind. It wants me to believe that the rift's existence is inevitable."
Selena patted him on the shoulder, her tone firm: "Don't be fooled by its words. We are the guardians, and our duty is to protect the balance of the universe, not to question it."
Wagner slammed his battle axe into the ground. "No matter what this thing says, it's in our way, so we'll smash it. That's the only truth."
The Guardians finally boarded the spaceship and, guided by the star map, headed towards the Vortex of Eternity. Inside, Ares felt an unusual heaviness in his heart. He couldn't ignore the influence of the Rift's whispers; those words seemed to strike at the very depths of his soul, causing him to ponder whether the rules of the universe were truly, as the Rift had described, a shackle that imprisoned everything.
"Ares, what are you thinking about?" Selena sat down next to him, interrupting his thoughts.
“I’m thinking that the words of the rift might contain some truth,” Ares murmured. “If the rules of the universe are truly flawed, are our repairs merely covering up these problems?”
Selena shook her head. "I don't know the answer. But I do know that repairing the rift is the only thing we can do right now. We can't predict the future, but we can protect the present."
Wagner walked out of the cockpit, grinning. "You two, don't overthink it. When we get there, just smash those things. Action is the best answer."
The spaceship traversed interstellar space, eventually arriving at the Eternal Vortex. The Guardians discovered that the boundary of this dimension was covered by a massive amount of rift energy, and the rules of time and space had almost completely collapsed. They could feel an invisible pressure, as if every step they took was being watched by countless eyes.
“This place is even more eerie than the abyss.” Wagner gripped his battle axe, his eyes wary.
“Stay calm.” Ares raised his rune sword, and complex runes reappeared on its blade. “The rift awaits us deep within. It will not let this dimension go easily.”
